More Than 2 MILLION NOTRE DAME FANS Served!

At exactly 6:57 PM ET last night, a Notre Dame fan from Phoenix became unique visitor #2 MILLION to the ND GO IRISH BLOG.

Yep—two million. Wild, right? Thank you!

This whole thing started back in 2010—15 years ago—after I gave my oldest son some “wise fatherly advice” over a Christmas break lunch with my college buddy and his daughter, who just happens to be one of my son’s good friends from their Saint Mary’s and Notre Dame days.

He actually listened. Started a blog.

Then I realized—I wasn’t following my own advice.

So I did what any self-respecting dad would do: I copied him. And here I am, still messing with this thing almost every day, 15 years later. Call me crazy. (Many have.)

But what’s happened since has been pretty amazing. Check out these stats:

  •  First post on January 17, 2010 -- 5,595 days ago
  •  15,917 stories posted on this site about the University of Notre Dame
  •  2,000,139 unique Notre Dame fans have read at least one story on this site -- at the time of this story

Notre Dame's In 2nd Place at NCAA Regional at FSU

John Handrigan's Fighting Irish had a great day today on the links at Florida State's home course in Tallahassee, FL --- scoring a combined -7 under par, trailing only the Seminoles.  Jacob Modelski, (the reigning ACC Champion) led Notre Dame with a five-under 67 -- also good for 2nd place after Day One of this three-day event.

Notre Dame leads some of the top golf programs in the country:

  • #11 Florida State:  -14
  • #39 Notre Dame: -7
  • #3 Ole Miss: -6
  • #22 Georgia:  -2
  • #15 San Diego State: E

Still have two days to go -- the low FIVE TEAMS will advance to the NCAA National Championship Tournament. At present, Georgia is in sixth place at -2.

OT: HUGE Problem Facing Many Families in America!

Since leaving Notre Dame in July of 2023, I've been working with the Pulte Family Charitable Foundation on the building of a "forever home" for young adults with an intellectual and developmental disability (I/DD) in Palm Beach County, FL.  For the first time ever -- adults with an I/DD are living longer than their parents.

Who is going to take care of them when Mom and Dad no longer can?  This is a huge looming issue in our country...

A Season That Could / Should Have Lasted Longer

One of the most talented (hyped) rosters in all of women's college basketball -- flew home to South Bend last night, not living up to the potential of what should have been.

I could go on and on as to why I think we are where we are with this program -- but I'll leave it with these three thoughts:

  1. Player development is suspect -- who has improved since their arrival?
  2. Our head coach is all ME and MY -- not WE and OUR -- could learn from Marcus Freeman on how leaders communicate.
  3. We have only signed TWO RECRUITS the past two recruiting cycles -- in a program that has a very short bench and injury prone -- why?

Here's who is expected to return next season:

  1. Hannah Hidalgo -- All-American, can she make those around her better?
  2. Cassandra Prosper -- has not lived up to the recruiting hype yet -- missed most of last season with an injury
  3. KK Bransford -- sat out this season (lingering leg injury)
  4. Leah Macy -- only incoming HS recruit -- rumored ACL (knee) injury, happened in January, will she even be available for 2025-26 season?

I guess the decision has been made to major in the TRANSFER PORTAL and minor in HIGH SCHOOL recruiting -- as our roster management strategy.  Never thought we'd see this at the University of Notre Dame.

UPDATE: Olivia Miles has chosen to enter the Transfer Portal over returning to Notre Dame or entering the WNBA Draft.  Joining her in the Transfer Portal is Emma Risch -- a sophomore who has had injury issues since her arrival in South Bend. Kate Koval, last year's top recruit (and only) -- game seemed to regress over the season.  And now, Kylee Watson has entered the Transfer Portal...

Notre Dame can't even play five-on-five basketball -- until June at the earliest.

Here's the "Gold-Lining" to this cloud -- I want to believe Niele will do the following:

  1. Find a roster out of the Transfer Portal that will get us competitive next season
  2. Look at her staff and make some needed changes to improve all aspects of the operation
    • Player development
    • Recruiting
    • Game management
    • Strength training
    • Etc
  3. Recruit, recruit, recruit -- the top high school talent in the country -- it is necessary
    • They have a University second to none
    • They have a fan base second to none
    • And, they have a practice facility second to none
And, work on how to communicate like a leader of a championship program.  It's not ME and MY -- it's WE and OUR.  It has to be about "all" (the team) and should never be about you.

Indian River County's Finest -- Saved Our Night's Sleep!

Our heroes L to R:  Lt. Mario Henderson, John Cobb, Lt. Josh Bender, Sheena Klaus, Robert Skok and Bobby Thompson.

At 10:31 PM ET on Monday night, our fire alarm shattered the silence—a loud, ear-piercing screech that jolted us out of bed. Adrenaline kicked in as we ran through the house, searching for any sign of smoke or fire. Thankfully, there was none.

Relieved but still on edge, we called ADT, hoping they could turn off the alarm. No luck.

Next, we reached out to our go-to electrician from Redline Electric in Vero Beach, FL. His advice? Shut off the circuit breaker to our Master Bedroom and Alarms. We held our breath, flipped the switch… and waited.

The alarm kept blaring.

Now we had a new problem—how do you silence an alarm that refuses to be turned off?

At 10:56 PM, my wife gave me the best advice of the night: Call the Fire Department.

Within minutes, the Indian River County Fire Rescue arrived in full force—two massive trucks and six of our community’s first responders, ready for action. They stepped inside, scanning every corner of our home, determined to track down the source of the relentless, ear-piercing screech.

Then, finally—a breakthrough. In our Great Room, they spotted a flashing red light on one of the alarms. The culprit had been found. The only problem? It was mounted 14 feet, 4 inches off the floor.

Without hesitation, three firefighters sprinted back to the truck, returning with a towering 24-foot ladder. Meanwhile, the others got to work clearing furniture, making space for what felt like the most dramatic rescue mission of the night: silencing that alarm once and for all.

Lt. Josh Bender—clearly the most electrically inclined of the group—climbed the ladder, unhooked the alarm, and pulled out the batteries.

And just like that… SILENCE.

What felt like an inevitable sleepless night—waiting until an electrician might arrive the next day—was suddenly avoided. Every alarm in our house had been blaring, an unbearable, unimaginable sound. But thanks to these six incredible first responders (pictured above), peace was restored.

Our heroes didn’t just show up—they rescued us from what could have been one of the loudest and longest night of our lives.  We can't thank Indian River County Fire Rescue enough!!!

As they were getting ready to leave, John Cobb glanced around my office and noticed the memorabilia on the walls.

"Are you a Notre Dame fan?" he asked.

I smiled and replied, "I had the great honor of working there for nearly 12 years."

That’s when John mentioned that he has an old friend whose son, Luke Talich (Wyoming), is currently playing football for the Fighting Irish. (Notre Dame fans will remember Luke's "pick six" versus Florida State this past season.) Without hesitation, I grabbed the iconic Notre Dame gold helmet and handed it to him so he could snap a photo to send to his buddy.

Somehow, Notre Dame always finds its way into many of the stories I tell… and this night was no exception.

FYI:  We just moved into our new home in Vero Beach on December 5, 2024

First Look: The New Golf Car Arrives Saturday

The new golf car is a Denago -- a new line of golf cars that debuted January 2023 at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando.  It's 'dual branded' beyond the gold and blue coloring -- you'll see some Notre Dame references (front hood, hub caps, slow moving vehicle decal on back) and references to my consulting business; The Small Things Consultancy (sides and back).

I will be adding marks from clients (before my time at Notre Dame and after) over the next few months -- along with some sub-brands our team created for the University -- in spots around the golf car.

If you live in Florida -- and see this running down a sidewalk or road -- please give me a honk and yell "Go Irish!"

This is the previous golf car we sold to a ND grad, along with our home near campus.

Photo of ND's New Football Facility's Walls Going Up!

One of my former colleagues at the University of Notre Dame (Brandon Tabor) was kind enough to send me this photo today of the construction going on of the new football facility.  It's going to be great!

That's the GUG to the left and the new Indoor Practice Facility on the right...
