2019 U.S. Senior Open at Notre Dame -- Stories

Took a lap around the worldwide web to see how the media and players are reacting to Notre Dame and its Warren Golf Course -- as the "first ever major golf championship played on a college campus" gets ready for its Thursday start...

Domer Dad Playing in 2019 U.S. Senior Open

Something I didn't know -- Kirk Triplett, who's won 16 professional golf tournaments -- just happens to be the father of Notre Dame alum; Conor Triplett '18.

Kirk won the PGA Champion Tour's Hoag Classic in March -- firing a (-10), winning in a playoff over Woddy Austin.  See his winning "eagle" below...

Here's a GolfWeek story about Kirk playing in this week's U.S. Senior Open at Notre Dame.

OT: Tornado Rips Through South Bend Tonight

This hit on the south side of South Bend around 9 PM this evening -- plenty of damage...  The photo above is from the Ireland Road area, where a kids day care facility was destroyed. The Ironwood Road area between Ireland and Lincoln Way was heavily damaged.

A Look Inside the Player's Locker Room...

Just click on photo to enlarge.
The 156 players scheduled to play in this week's 2019 U.S. Senior Open Championship began checking in to the locker room this weekend.

The temporary locker room was constructed "over top" of the putting green -- inside Notre Dame Golf's indoor practice facility on the west end of Warren Golf Course's practice area.  Quite an engineering feat!

Every player has a locker -- if you're a past champion -- like Tom Watson -- your "full size" locker is located in a special row (along the back wall) of all of the former U.S. Senior Open Champions.

Photos: Inside New Indoor Practice Facility

View to the south end of facility.
View to the north end of facility.
View of video board and doors to practice fields.
View of the hard rubber surface that is laid down over the rock base.
Just "click" on this image to enlarge the pano view of facility.

Toured the new Notre Dame Football indoor practice facility this afternoon.  As you can see they're putting down the "hard rubber" layer over the gravel -- as they get ready to bring in the Field Turf next week.

The inside height of the facility is 85' -- driving by the facility I thought it would be easy to punt a ball and hit the ceiling.  Standing on the floor -- highly unlikely this will ever happen. I believe the indoor ceiling height is the highest in college football.

The Notre Dame Men's & Women's Soccer programs will also be using this facility.

The hope is we'll be ready to use this come August 1st.  The building is not air conditioned -- instead they have a system that recirculates the air.  I can tell you it was at least five degrees cooler inside than it was outside today and the "air machine" was not on.

Happy Father's Day to My Dad and All the Dad's

Here's my Dad back in 1956 when he was 19 years-old -- his second season as a center fielder with the Detroit Tigers.

I want to wish my DAD -- a Happy Father's Day -- thanks for showing me the ropes in so many areas.  I am very lucky that you're my Dad!

It also doesn't hurt that he's a huge Notre Dame fan as well!!!

OT: Seventy-Five Years Ago Today! D-Day!

I can't imagine charging that beach...

Love the Brick Selection on the New Corby Hall

Took this photo last night of the brick going up on the new and improved Corby Hall on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.

I was anxious to see what brick was selected for this building -- which is attached to the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.  Notre Dame alums know all about the "Notre Dame brick" that was made from the mud around the two lakes on campus in the 1800's and it's familiar "yellowish-white" color...

Well -- as you may be able to tell in this photo -- the brick selected, has some characteristics that should match quite nicely with the Basilica's 149 year-old facade.

That's the legendary "Hand of God" tree -- an enormous Sycamore tree -- in the foreground.
