Will Coach Kelly Get a Jumbotron @ ND?

Coach Kelly made some news this week when he met with some students at Siegfried Hall on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.   Besides talking about some uniform changes for the Irish this fall -- he was asked a question whether he would like to see a "jumbotron" in Notre Dame Stadium.  His answer:  "YES..."

Last June, a Notre Dame alum -- who's an architect -- posted these architectural renderings (click on them to enlarge) of how he would re-design Notre Dame Stadium.  As you can see -- a JUMBOTRON is part of his proposed re-design in the south end of the Stadium -- opposite "Touchdown Jesus."  And, a few private suites to add to the Stadium's seating capacity.  What do you think?

  2. Did you notice in the renderings that the section would be taken out so that Touchdown Jesus would be visible like the old days!

  3. Tradition doesn't win football games. Athletes and staff win football games. We have a budding genius in BK, who will win it all if he has the "right-kinda-guys." These right-kinda-guys have evolved from studs with the right attitude (which had been missing with Weis' staff of underachievers) to real talent > BOTH talent AND toughness. These are the players, Aaron Lynch notwithstanding, who ARE NotrDame football.

  4. I love the architectural renderings. I'm with Brian Kelly in realizing that the way to get 5 star blue chippers to commit to ND is building an amazing, EXCITING atmosphere. Night games, loud fans, 100,000 seat stadiums, etc are what draw these 18 year old kids that have their pick of any top program in the country. The argument that they just need to win is putting the cart before the horse. You need to recruit the best talent FIRST in order to win National Championships. In order to recruit at that level, you need the best facilities and the best atmosphere. That is what is currently lacking at Notre Dame. BK is trying to change that. Kudos!

  5. Top athletes don't want to come to ND. Mike Floyd, Kyle Rudolph, Jimmy Clausen, Dayne Crist, Ethan Johnson, Manti Teo, Aaron Lynch, Stephon Tuitt, Jaylon Smith, Alex Anzalone, Gunner Kiel, etc; all highly recruited players that held offers from the best of the best.

Has it ever occurred to the "get a jumbotron and we'll get better players" crowd that the fact that ND Stadium doesn't have a jumbo tron actually appeals to some recruits? Believe it or not, some athletes think it's cool and unique (see Michael Floyd).

If Kelly can't win without a jumbotron, he's not going to win with a jumbotron. Furthermore, if ND Stadium does get a jumbotron, it should be on ND's terms, not Brian Kelly's (and his 16-10 record).

    1. Care to amend that statement Mr. Anonymous?

The right thing to do, in my humble opinion, is to open the north end of the stadium again. If you want to use appeal and tradition, that should be high on the list.

As to the recruits thinking it's "cool and unique", you named ONE. That does little to support an absurd position.
