I stopped by the Grotto last night to say a prayer and light a candle for my Dad -- James Arthur Small -- and frankly for all of the DADS out there...

Every year on this day -- I find a way to post this poem from Nelle A. Williams on my blog.  Years ago, I had this framed and put up on the bedroom walls of my two boys; Jimmy and Brady...

 

YOUR FAMILY NAME

You got it from your father
It was all he had to give
So it's yours to use and cherish
For as long as you may live
If you lost the watch he gave you
It can always be replaced;
But a black mark on your name
Can never be erased
It was clean the day you took it
And a worthy name to bear
When he got it from his father
There was no dishonor there
So make sure you guard it wisely

Former Notre Dame All-American Jeff Samardzija -- just hit the longest home run in the Statcast era by a pitcher -- 446 feet!

This is the third home run of Jeff's MLB career.

Plenty of Transfer Talent Headed to Notre Dame

It's been a busy time for the folks in charge of transfer admissions at the University of Notre Dame...

In the last few months -- FIVE TALENTED STUDENT-ATHLETES -- made the decision to wear the BLUE and GOLD of Notre Dame:

• Lili Thompson -- a three-year starter at Stanford
• Jessica Shepard -- an All-Big Ten hoop star from Nebraska
• Freddy Canteen -- a wide receiver from Michigan
• Cameron Smith -- a wide receiver from Arizona State
• Alohi Gilman -- a safety from the Naval Academy

A sixth let Coach Brey know this morning that he has chosen to bring his talents to South Bend -- once the University makes it official, we'll announce it here.

Notre Dame Adds Transfer from Naval Academy

His name is Alohi Gilman -- and he "left a mark" on Notre Dame football this past season...

Gilman made a game high 12 tackles in Navy's 28 - 27 win over our Irish.

Here's hoping he leaves a mark on a Trojan, Wolverine and Cardinal in the coming years!

Big Ten Hoops Star Transfers to Notre Dame

It finally became official this afternoon -- when Notre Dame sent out the release below...

6'- 4" sophomore center Jessica Shepard, a one-time Big Ten Rookie of the Year -- is now officially enrolled at Notre Dame.  Shepard, who will have to sit out the upcoming season, will have two years of eligibility left with Muffet's Fighting Irish.

Shepard had a 35 point / 20 rebound game during her freshman season with the Cornhuskers. She averaged 18 points and 9 boards a game her sophomore season.

Jessica was the consensus #3 ranked player in the country -- in the recruiting class that landed Notre Dame Arike Ogunbowale and Marina Mabrey.  A great get for ND!

Former Notre Dame hockey star Bryan Rust -- just did it again -- his 7th goal of the NHL Playoffs, putting the Penguins up 2 - 0 in tonight's 5th game of the Stanley Cup Playoffs!

A Family Affair at the NCAA Track Meet!

Notre Dame's Dani Aragon '17 and her sister Christina (Stanford) are seen here in this photo just taken at the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, OR.

The sisters finished in a virtual tie, with Christina beating her older sister by 5 hundredths of a second in the 1,500 meters -- qualifying them both for Saturday's final!

Domer Mancini's Big Night for the Orioles!

Former Notre Dame baseball star Trey Mancini -- did something no one has ever done in an Oriole uniform last night...

He's the first in franchise history to hit a game tying home run as a pinch hitter -- and then follow it up with a game winning home run in the next at bat.

What a night for the rookie!
